Our Expertise: Design of novel concepts for antivirals

Development of novel concepts for drugs against H5N1 influenza

Design of an entry inhibitor for H5N1 viruses (avian flu). The inhibitor prevents attachment of viral proteins to the receptor, i.e. sialic acid.

Entry inhibitor for influenza H5N1 (avian flu) virus

Antiviral drugs are in great need to target newly evolving viral threats. We showed that an entry inhibitor with a very high binding affinity can effectively block the binding of the virus to its receptors on human cells. Those receptors are sialic acids. The work has been published in the scientific journal: Journal of the American Chemical Society.
